Current Institution: Curtin University
Fellowship: OLT National Teaching Fellowship at Curtin University
Fellowship Duration: 2013 - 2015
There is a paucity of material available to support supervisors of honours and coursework dissertation students in Australian universities. Most universities provide policy and procedural documents relating to undergraduate, honours and masters dissertation supervision, but limited information is provided on thepractice of supervision. Previous research suggests a disjuncture between supervisor and student expectations of the supervisory relationship and uncertainties surrounding good supervisory practice. Working within the AQF framework, the proposed fellowship aims to identify, develop and disseminate best practice to support supervisors of honours and coursework dissertation students in Australian universities. Key outcomes of the proposed fellowship include an annotated bibliography; documented needs assessment based on interviews with supervisors, coordinators and students; documented best practice resulting from workshops with experienced supervisors; and an online training module. Hosted on a website, materials will be disseminated through conference presentations, publications and workshops. Increasing the quality of honours and coursework dissertation supervision through the incorporation of best practice will enhance the research training culture within universities and learning experiences for students.
